G7 caravan visits Hamburg – social struggle against neocolonial interests

In the weeks leading up to the caravan, several of the invited speakers from the global south were prevented from obtaining a German visa.
For that reason the international caravan „for life instead of g7“ visiting the Centro and Rote Flora social spaces in Hamburg arrived with a smaller delegation than planned.
Nevertheless, an afternoon informal exchange with local groups and a public event in the evening took place enabling  intensive discussion about challenges and fields of conflict of social movements in the global south and their relations.
Whether raw material extraction on the african continent or megaprojects in mexico, capitalist interests are enforced using state and paramilitary violence at the expense of local communities. In proper colonial tradition, regions are preyed upon and people threatened if they are not obedient. To highlight that those conflicts are not a regional issue but a global system it is especially interesting to listen to many voices undergoing similar experiences.
Despite organisational topics like organizing an event in the middle of the week at the afternoon and some compañer@s lost to corona quarantine, there was good food, good talks and more or less 50 interested people who found their way to the Centro. There was an event by Ende Gelände Hamburg taking place simultaneously at the rote flora with among others one of the activists of the caravan, which was well visited as well.
A more extensive evaluation and discussion about how to use the new impulses, contacts and thoughts for hamburg will follow.
